Bedroom Door Locks

If you happen to be in a situation where you need to keep someone out, these locks are very vulnerable. They can be knocked out of the door and at that point are useless. A door knob is not the hardest thing in the world to break or knocked out of a door. In the end, these locks are best for privacy and not for security.

Bedroom Door Locks

There are plenty of locks that can keep people out of your bedroom. The most common are built right into the knob or handle of your door. These are not the most secure, but still do their job of keeping people out. There are more secure options such as deadbolts. Deadbolts do a great job of making a space secure. Even if you have unorthodox styles of doors, there are locks that are available to keep the door locked.

Not all rooms have the same kinds of doors. While typically you will find a bedroom with a standard hinged door, there are variations. One of these variations is a pocket door. These doors slide open rather than swing open like most doors. This can make locking these doors an interesting challenge. If your bedroom has one of these pocket doors, the best way to lock them may be a hook lock. These locks are metal hooks that come out of the door and latch onto a bar in the frame.

For extra privacy, you can add a surface bolt to the interior of the room. These locks install on the door and slide to latch into a holder on the door frame. They aren’t on the doorknob, so they cannot be unlocked from the outside. For this reason, they are appropriate for an adult’s bedroom, not a child’s. They should be mounted at the top of the door to prevent access from small children.

They are not incredibly strong locks so they may not be great for security, but do stop entry. Because the door does open slightly, whoever is at the door may be able to see into the room a bit, but it is still ok for privacy. The opening of the door can be a benefit if you are willing to have a conversation face to face with someone but still want to stop them from entering the room.

While these can be great to maintain privacy, these kinds of locks are terrible when it comes to security. Many of these kinds of locks can be unlocked from the other side through a small hole in the center of the knob. Even for those that cannot be unlocked this way, the lock mechanism is entirely located in the knob.

If you own or rent a condo, you know that many have policies that state you cannot add another lock to your door. This is due to the requirement that you cannot drill a hole through the door as the outside of the door belongs to the building’s common elements. Use the Portable Door Lock while you are home. Don’t let the superintendent, cleaning staff, repair people or anyone else enter when you are home without your permission.

Generally, interior doors do not need keyed locks, so they probably have a thumb lock. These may be a push button lock or a simple turning lever in the center of the door.

To get through a deadbolt style lock, you will have to work through the door itself, the wall, or the bar that the deadbolt uses. All of these options are difficult. It may be strange seeing a deadbolt on an inside door; it is not completely unheard of.

Note: Using any door stop, door deadbolt, chain, or similar device could delay emergency personnel from entering the room in case of an emergency. Consider all scenarios prior to engaging these types of devices.

Was looking for something to jam a door closed from the inside while at home or traveling after the bag containing my portable Presto-lock went missing. It's simple to use, compact and light weight, however, the black bar that goes into the strike plate is flexible and I am not sure how much pressure it would take to snap it and defeat the device. Have not had anyone try to force my door yet, so will have to see. My old Prestolock stood up to the force of a determined, but failed intruder while I was showering. Not sure if this device would snap under same kind of pressure. The bar also has a rough jagged edge.
